"During routine springtime sprinkler system check-ups, I inspect the condition of the handles of the double-check valve, (or other backflow device).  Generally the handles are badly deteriorated.  When I show this to my customer, and explain that one of the functions of the valve is as the emergency shut-off for the system, they usually insist that I install new handles.  I recommend replacing existing handles before the corrosion process advances.
